Drill Team...

We rode our Curlies in a horseback drill team for many years riding in parades and opening for shows and rodeos. My horse Ghost Wind absolutely loves attention and upon seeing a camera he will hold a pose for as long as he thinks you are looking at him. Anyway, we performed our routines to music and Ghost Wind sure loved the beat of the music. He would time his movements with it and it was just like he was dancing. All of the horses loved being a part of the Drill Team and Ghost Wind just soaked up all of the attention he could get. The local newspaper would frequently be at the shows and rodeos getting pictures and of course Ghost Wind would be posing every chance he got.

At one of the rodeos my little sister and her horse got to hold the American flag for the National Anthem and throughout the entire song her horse was urinating. We did our best to muffle our laughter but it was hard and her face was as red as the flag. She wanted to go hide as soon as it was over.

The difference with Curlies...

Well, one of the big differences we noticed with the curlies is that they think before they react. Even when they are enduring pain of some sort, they have shown us that they will suffer pain in order to keep from putting us in danger.

One example of this is when we were out brush riding in the mountains. We had probably ten riders on our curlies and I was in the lead. Apparently I stirred up a nest of yellow jackets that everyone behind me got the pleasure of riding through, lol. We had one beginner rider with us that had only been on a horse once or twice. The horse he was riding knew he was new at it and instead of running off with the rest of the horses he walked just as fast as he could while getting stung over and over. After we got out of the brush and I got a chance to check him out, that poor horse had at least twenty yellow jacket stingers on his belly and legs.

And that is a typical Curly...

First riding story...

Well, I actually have always loved and had an interest in horses but I was scared to ride for a long time. I overcame that fear to impress one of my brothers.  He lived a few hours away from us and would come visit for a few days at a time. While he was here he would train some of the young horses. I would work so hard at perfecting my riding skills just to show off when he came to visit.
One of my other brothers and I loved when Clifton visited because we would get up early in the morning and take off riding with a packed lunch. When Mom would ask us what time we would be back Cliff would always say "dark 30". The funny thing is it would always be about what you would consider dark 30 when we would get home.

Riding after dark was always a blast, of course your eyes would adjust as the sun set so it wasn't that big a deal. We liked making our own fireworks by running the horses and doing a sliding stop with plain steel shoes on the paved road. Oh no... right??? lol     Well, we didn't think about it being dangerous and honestly the horses were having as much fun as we were.
We made it sort of a family tradition for a number of years when Cliff would visit to go on big trail rides, especially on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and on those cold days we would radio back to the house with our walkie-talkies when we were about a mile out "ok, start getting the hot chocolate warmed up". I really miss Clifton... he passed away many years ago at the young age of 23, a drunk driver ran a stop light and killed him on impact. I have thought about starting that trail riding tradition back up but I don't think it could ever be the same.

Well, I have been threatening to start a blog, so here goes....

I have so many stories of crazy things my siblings and I did in our youth, the best of them being horseback. So I have started this with the intention of sharing those crazy stories that will make you worry every time your child goes riding, lol.

To start off with, I am number 10 of 11 children and we were raised very old fashioned. We raised most all of the food we ate,  milked cows, and canned and dried the food for winter storage . We worked hard but I now know to appreciate the life lesson I was receiving.

My earliest memory of riding was this crazy (well I think she was crazy) Quarter Horse/Arab mare that had previously been abused. We could only ride her with an adult leading and she had this big issue with patience, but she was our horse and I loved her anyway.

I grew up on a farm and loved the life. I want my children to have the opportunity to grow as a person like I did.
